Walter Grant Schnoebelen

Walter Grant Schnoebelen, 89, of Iowa City, passed away at his sister’s home on September 1, 2025, surrounded by his niece, Cindy O’Leary and sister, Eileen Patricia Schnoebelen Rogers.  Grant had been battling prostate cancer since 2023, which progressed into bone cancer.  Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2025, from 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the Snyder & Hollenbaugh Funeral & Cremation Services of Riverside with funeral services following at 2:00 p.m.  Burial will be in the St. Vincent’s Cemetery with military rites provided by the Riverside V.F.W. Post 6414.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice in memory of Grant.  Online condolences for the family may be sent to www.sandhfuneralservice.com.

Walter Grant Schnoebelen was born on June 16, 1936, in Iowa City, Iowa the son of Walter and Ruth Frances (Thompson) Schnoebelen.  He was a 1953 graduate of Iowa City High.  Grant was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1956 and served until 1962.  He married Claudia Hopkins in 1962 and Linda Phelps in 1987.  Grant farmed and helped others with farming along with working at the Heinz Warehouse in Iowa City for more than 20 years as a forklift driver.  He was the past president of the Johnson Couty Farm Bureau and enjoyed dancing, playing cards, working and farming.

Grant is survived by his children, Therese Hood of Edmond, Oklahoma, Melinda Schnoebelen of Lynn, Massachusetts, Joseph Schnoebelen of Fairfax and Michael Schnoebelen of Kalona; grandchildren, Aaron Schnoebelen of Plano, Texas and Byron Hood of Edmond, Oklahoma; sister, Eileen P. Rogers of Iowa City; brother, Larry (Cheryl) Schnoebelen of Iowa City and many nieces and nephews.

Grant was preceded in death by his parents; son, Eric Grant Schnoebelen in 2019; sisters, Georgia Aubrecht, Carol Neuzil and Virginia Carmody and brothers, Kenneth Schnoebelen, Gordon Schnoebelen and John Schnoebelen.
