Robert Henry Obituary

     Robert Lloyd Henry, 88 of Galesburg passed away Sunday, March 22, 2020. Robert was born December 7, 1931, in Keokuk, Iowa to Lloyd Hilbert Henry and Wilma Lois Dickinson Henry. He had a younger sister Beverly who passed away at the age of four.

    Bob had many exploits in his adventures growing up in Keokuk with its river town life. He loved the outdoors building and flying model planes, boating, fishing, and as Boy Scout adventures along the Mississippi river with his father Lloyd who was den leader. Bob attend schools in Keokuk, Iowa and graduated from Keokuk High School in 1949. He went on to attend the University of Iowa and Iowa Wesleyan University. He graduated from Iowa Wesleyan University in 1953. Bob was an expert at photography—a skill he shared with his father. He took many of the photos for yearbooks at Keokuk High School and Iowa Wesleyan University. It was at Iowa Wesleyan University, that he met the love of his life, Josephine Louella Taylor.

     He began his teaching career in Ogden, Iowa. He worked as a clerk for the Santa Fe Railroad in Fort Madison, Iowa, Lockport and Galesburg, Illinois. He was a principal for the grade school in ROVA. He taught in Durant, Iowa, as well as Yorkwood and Galesburg School Districts in Illinois. He was very proud of having been certified in “new math” at Western Illinois University in 1965 and then introducing it to the Yorkwood Junior High students. He loved working with his students and had many good memories of his teaching days.

     Bob married Josephine Louella Taylor of Wapello, Iowa on July 15, 1956. They taught and raised a family together. Bob and Josephine retired from teaching and he was able to enjoy hobbies as well as his grandchildren and great grandchildren. One of his favorite past times was cheering on his beloved St Louis Cardinals--adding to a very relaxing retirement up until his death.

     Bob is survived by his loving wife Josephine, daughter Bobby Jo (Dennis) Maurer of Knoxville, IL, son Kent (Mary) Henry of Davenport, IA, son Michael Henry of Galesburg, IL, his four grandchildren, Daniella Henry, Shawn (Erin) Maurer, Seth (Yilmer) Henry, Christopher (Megan) Maurer and four great grandchildren Jon Hawkes, Ethan Hawkes, Adam Maurer, Kate Maurer, and his nieces Beth Fleenor, Dawn Miller, and Rebecca Pettis.

     Due to the current COVID-19 virus restrictions allowing only a private burial with immediate family, there will be a private graveside service at the Mallory Cemetery, Wapello, IA. At a point to be determined by our nation overcoming the virus, a celebration of life service will be held with family and friends.
