Mildred Linder, age 106, of Winfield, died Wednesday, September 6, 2023 at the Sunrise Terrace Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Winfield. A graveside service and interment will take place at the Winfield Scott Township Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the Winfield United Methodist Church, Sunrise Terrace Nursing and Rehabilitation Center or the Winfield Public Library in memory of Mildred. Mildred was born February 28, 1917 on a farm east of Winfield to Fred and Dora Chrissinger. She married Virgil Linder on September 16, 1935 in Charles City, Iowa. He preceded her in death in 1990. To this union two children were born: Janice Nadine De Steunder and Monty Karl Linder.
Mildred attended Winfield Consolidated School, graduating in May of 1935. She was a homemaker and worked several years at the Winfield Telephone Company as a telephone operator and two years as chief telephone operator. In June of 1966, she graduated from Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant. Mildred taught school for 22 years at Wyman and Mt. Union and retired in 1979.
After retiring, Mildred and her husband traveled and eventually bought a mobile home in Mesa, Arizona where they spent the winters for 14 years. She was a member of the Winfield United Methodist Church for many years and taught Sunday School. She was a former member of the Eastern Star, the Teachers Association and pinochle club. Mildred served on the Winfield Public Library Board and on the advocate committee at Sunrise Terrace where she also volunteered. She enjoyed quilting, embroidering, painting, reading, and writing letters.
Mildred will be deeply missed by her children: Janice Nadine De Steunder of San Diego, CA and Monty K. Linder of Loveland, CO; four grandchildren: Scott (Kari) Haight of Portland, OR; Gregg Haight of San Diego, CA; Chris (Christi) Linder of Johnstown, CO; and Tracy Linder of Loveland, CO; three great-grandchildren: Nathan and Ingrid Haight and Mandi Linder; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three brothers; and three sisters.
