Luvern “Vern” Joseph Overmohle was born January 12, 1943, in Carroll, Iowa, the son of Anton
and Lauretta (Mooney) Overmohle. He graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Storm
Lake and later attended business school in Omaha. Vern proudly served his country in the United
States Army during the Vietnam War. On May 21, 1977, Vern was united in marriage to Eileen,
and together they built a life centered around family.
Vern worked at Allworth Lumber Yard before beginning a career with Ceco Buildings in Mt.
Pleasant, where he worked for more than 20 years. After retiring, he stayed active by working
part-time at Jack and Jill Grocery Store in Wapello.
Vern was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Columbus Junction and the Wapello VFW.
He generously gave his time volunteering for many projects, especially helping maintain the
grounds at St Mary’s Catholic church in the years before it’s closure. Vern enjoyed fishing,
camping, carpentry projects, playing BINGO, and attending Wapello sporting events. He loved
spending time with his grandkids, going to their events and especially giving them golfcart rides
around town. Vern was rarely without a fresh pot of coffee and welcomed friends and neighbors
who would stop by for a visit and conversation. He especially loved the Christmas season, taking
pride in decorating his home with Christmas lights and baking holiday treats to share with family
and friends.
Vern will be deeply missed by his wife, Eileen; daughters, Renee (Eric Eickman) Funderburk
and Miranda (Nathan) Atkinson; grandchildren, Rowen Atkinson, Cam Funderburk, Alex
Funderburk, Harper Atkinson and Knox Atkinson and sister, Betty Schmitt.
Vern was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Amy Marie Overmohle and siblings, Rita
Jansen, Leo Overmohle, Rose Ann Koch, Mary Breon, Lois Kestel and Donald “Butch”
Overmohle.
