Luella Rae (Fry) Chatterton 81 of Grandview, passed away Monday July 27, 2020. Visitation will be on Friday July 31, 2020 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Snyder & Hollenbaugh Funeral & Cremation Services, (formerly Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home) of Wapello. Funeral Service for Luella will be 10:30 a.m. on Saturday August 1, 2020 in the chapel at the Snyder & Hollenbaugh Funeral & Cremation Services, (formerly Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home) of Wapello. Graveside service immediately following at the Wapello Cemetery. At the conclusion of Graveside services, all are invited to attend a fellowship luncheon hosted by the family at the Corner Market in Wapello.
Born December 29, 1938 in Grandview, Luella was the second daughter, fourth child to Ralph T and Frances M (McGill) Fry. She was a 1956 graduate of Grandview High School. Luella had two children: Shirley (Steven) McKinney of Blythewood, SC and Michael (Annette) Angelo of Syracuse, NE. She was known as, “Mom" to: Marcie, Jackie, Steve, Dennis, Kenny, Rusty, Debbie, and Cathy. Those privileged to call her Grandma are: Heather, Jessica, Brian, and Katie McKinney, Molly Wise, Cara Gethmann, and Stephenee Schwandke. Her great grandchildren are: Simon, Kayden, Elleanor, Glenn, Grace, Jill, Zoe, Daphne, Pandora, and Grayson.
After several years of working at Thatcher Plastic Packaging in Muscatine, IA Luella owned and operated the Grandview Corners Cafe, serving up delicious daily dinner specials and wonderful desserts. She also offered a, “poor man's special”, so no one ever went away hungry. After selling the Cafe she rode the L&M special needs bus as an Aide and worked as a custodian at the school until her retirement in 2004.
On April 11, 1998 Luella married her best friend, Walter "Dale" Chatterton in their home in Grandview. As was her nature she devoted nearly all of her time to him until his passing on March 7, 2020. Luella and Dale looked forward to "cards night" with their friends and rooting for the Hawkeyes. Throughout her home, you'll see her love of embroidery and crafting as well as her enjoyment of turtles. Above all else Luella dearly loved spending time with her family. She was always there to lend a helping hand or offer a shoulder to lean on to anyone who needed it.
Luella was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Walter “Dale” Chatterton, her brothers Tom Fry, and Oral Fry. She is survived by her children, her sister Gwendolyn (Verdon) Carter of Davenport, IA, her brother Kenneth Fry of Grandview, IA, all of her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
