Leona Elizabeth (Mathes) Ellithorpe

Leona Elizabeth Ellithorpe, 74, of Walcott, passed away on Wednesday, March 8, 2023 at the University of Iowa Hospital & Clinics. Memorial Services will be held on Tuesday, March 14, 2023 at 11:00 A.M.  at the Wilton Union Hall, 420 East 3rd Street, Wilton, Iowa.  Interment will be at a later date with burial to be held at Letts Cemetery.   A memorial has been established at the funeral home in memory of Leona. Leona was born September 23, 1948 in Muscatine, Iowa, the daughter of Ira “Tin” and Ada “Lizzy” (Nickols) Mathes. On March 14, 1992, Leona was united in marriage to Albert Ellithorpe in Wilton, Iowa.  She had worked for CDS, J&K Button and as a cook for several of the surrounding care centers.  Her most notable job description was that she was the first female mail carrier in both Muscatine and Scott County .  Leona was a member of Glee Club and played Tuba in her younger years.  She was also involved with the Garden Club and Hospital Auxiliary.    Leona enjoyed shopping, fishing, camping, playing cards with her friends and spending time with her family. 

Leona will be deeply missed by her husband, Albert Ellithorpe of Walcott; daughter, Dorinda Marshall of Matherville, IL; and son, Kyle Ellithorpe of Wilton; grandchildren: Tyler Ellithorpe, Lillian Ellithorpe, Eliza Ellithorpe, Miranda Jones, Rex Marshall, Jessica Marshall and Marke Scott Goosby.

Leona was preceded in death by her parents; infant son, Michael James Burke on January 22, 1982 and brothers, Timothy Mathes; and Stevie Mathes.
