Joseph (Joe) John Hagerty, 75, of Muscatine, died on Monday, January 20, 2025, at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City.  A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, January 24, 2025 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Riverview Center, 1-51 Harbor Drive, Muscatine, IA 52761.  Food and drinks will be provided.  Memorials may be directed to the family in memory of Joe Hagerty.  The Snyder & Hollenbaugh Funeral and Cremation Services of Muscatine is caring for the family.  Online condolences may be left at www.sandhfuneralservice.com

Joe was born on June 28, 1949, in Marshalltown, Iowa, the son of John and Joanna Hagerty. He married Melodie Curry in Muscatine on October 16, 1982.

Joe grew up on a farm in Deep River, Iowa. He graduated from BGM High School in Brooklyn, IA, in 1967. After high school, he attended Marshalltown Community College before volunteering for the Vietnam War in 1971. He was trained as a mechanic but ultimately served as a door gunner because, in Joe’s words, “they didn’t need any mechanics that day.” He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army after 15.5 months of service. Upon returning from military service, he received degrees from NE Missouri State and the University of Iowa.

After college, he worked as a counselor in group homes for 7 years. He moved to Muscatine in 1982 and worked with the Carmody brothers constructing Mississippi Brewing Companies in eastern Iowa. He then got a job working for the City of Muscatine, where he retired after 24 years. In addition to his work at the City, he also owned a residential plumbing and electrical business. He enjoyed working, hunting, shopping at Menards, and spending time with his family. The biggest joys in his life were his family: his wife, three children, and two grandchildren.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Melodie Hagerty of Muscatine; three sons, Ryan Hagerty of Muscatine, Colin Hagerty and wife Saige of Milton, Wisconsin, and Nolan Hagerty and wife Katelyn of Waukee, Iowa; two grandchildren, Harper (Colin & Saige) and Joseph (Nolan & Kate); two brothers, Robert (Bob) Hagerty and wife Barbara of Deep River, Iowa, and Matthew Hagerty and wife Tammy of Johnston, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Joanna Hagerty.
