Janet Welsch Obituary

Janet Welsch, 82, of Atalissa, passed away on Wednesday, May 3, 2023 at the University of Iowa Hospital. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, May 8, 2023 at the Snyder & Hollenbaugh Funeral & Cremation Services of Muscatine where the family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Monday. Interment will be at Muscatine Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the family in Janet’s memory. Sympathy notes may be left for the family at www.sandhfuneralservice.com.

Janet Sue Karns was born March 1, 1941 in Vincennes, Iowa, the daughter of Louis and Norma (Kinkead) Karns. She graduated from Keokuk High School in 1959 and from cosmetology school in Muscatine in 1977. Janet was united in marriage to Dean Welsch on May 1, 1981 in Muscatine.

Janet worked as a data entry typist and in customer service at CDS for several years. She also worked as a beautician for a short time. Janet was a resident of Atalissa since 1980 and was a member of the Atalissa Betterment Committee. She loved working in her community. She enjoyed woodworking, going to street dances and having a bloody mary on her birthday. She loved visiting Montana, country music and her dogs. She was a talented painter, beautifying rocks, feathers and faces at the fair. Her greatest joy in life came from the time spent with her family.

She will be deeply missed by her children: Dawn (Dean) Huggins of Atalissa; Tom Downey of Atalissa; Jim (Tracy) Downey of Iowa City; Harry Downey of Atalissa; and Dan (Katrina) Downey of Muscatine; grandchildren: Bobbi, Jason, Keffany, Tiffany, Theron, Terrace, Allisha, Latoshia, Drake, Timber, Amber, Kelly, Nicki and Tommy; and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; siblings: Michael (Judy) Karns of Coal Valley, IL; Shawn (Amber) Karns of Galesburg, IL; Sally (Gerry) Earnest of Moline, IL; and Melody (Dudley) Trone of East Moline, IL; and many nieces and nephews.

Janet was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and one great-granddaughter, Aliyah.
