Janet (Pontzius) Buffington

Janet L. Buffington, 69, of Wapello, passed away Tuesday, January 17, 2023 at her residence. A memorial has been established at the funeral home in Janet’s memory. Janet was born February 24, 1953 in Burlington, Iowa, the daughter of Art and Mabel (Yotter) Pontzius. She graduated from Wapello High School in 1971. Janet was united in marriage to Mike Buffington on September 10, 1975 in Grandview.

Janet worked various jobs which include a cook at a nursing home, a donut maker for Casey’s, and for the Walmart Bakery for several years. She enjoyed collecting snowmen, bird watching, caring for her house plants and Iowa Hawkeye sports, particularly basketball. Her greatest joy in life came from time spent with her family, especially her two granddaughters.

Janet will be deeply missed by her husband, Mike Buffington of Wapello; son, Kevin (Meaghan) Buffington of Columbus Junction; daughter, Kim (Chester) Broughton of Melcher-Dallas; daughter, Kristy Buffington (John) of Wapello; granddaughters: MacKenzie Green (Pat) and Emile Newcomb; great-granddaughter on the way, Clara May; siblings: Jim, Barb, Kay and Carolyn; and several nieces and nephews.  

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Bob; one niece; and three brothers-in-law.

The family would like to thank Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice and Janet’s second family: Cate, Izzy, Kari and Tash at the Dialysis Center in Muscatine, for their loving and compassionate care of Janet.
