Jim was born June 15, 1941 in Rock Island, Illinois, the son of Edgar and Mildred (Flake) Johnson. The family relocated to Lone Tree and that is where Jim grew up. He graduated from Lone Tree High School. Jim served honorably in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War, where he was stationed at Kindley Air Force Base in Bermuda. He was united in marriage to Carol Riggan on June 24, 1961 at the First Methodist Church in Lone Tree.
Jim and Carol spent many years camping and boating with their family and group of close Lone Tree friends and families. Jim always managed to get away to take his kids fishing even though he had a severe allergy to fish. They enjoyed traveling so much, each summer they loaded the pickup camper and took family vacations exploring America. Their travels continued when they went to Texas twice a year to visit Jimmy and his family while they lived there.
Jim retired from IES Utilities. He also worked for Per Mar and took tickets at the Iowa Hawkeyes games for several years. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, American Legion and City Council, serving as Mayor at one time. Jim was a Cub Master and volunteered with the Lone Tree Fire Department.
Jim loved athletics and had several school records in basketball and track during his high school years at Lone Tree High School. He continued his passion for sports where he rarely missed any of his kids or grandkids activities. Whether it was a sport event or band concert you would find him sitting in the stands.
Every morning and afternoon you would find Jim uptown drinking coffee with the guys. He truly enjoyed spending time with them and called each of them a friend.
He will be deeply missed by his son, James K. Johnson and wife Fran of Lone Tree, IA; daughter, Jamie Lorack and husband Tim of Nichols, IA; grandchildren: Hannah and Holley Johnson, Amanda (Tyler) Stutsman, and James, Payton and Arlie Lorack; great-grandchildren: Beau and Blakely Stutsman; and his beloved dog, Miley.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and sister, Marlene Walker and her husband Don.
