Jack Carter

LETTS-Jackie E. Carter, 90, of Letts, passed away on Monday, December 23, 2024 at Lutheran Living. Visitation will be 11:00 am until 1:00 pm on Saturday, December 28, 2024 at Snyder & Hollenbaugh Funeral & Cremation Services of Columbus Junction.  Funeral Services will be at 1:00 pm on Saturday, December 28, 2024 at the funeral home.  Burial with Military Honors will be in Letts Cemetery.  Following the burial, a time of food and fellowship will be held at the Letts Community Center.  Memorials have been established for the Letts United Methodist Church, Grandview-Letts Lions Club and St. Croix Hospice in Jack’s name.  Sympathy notes may be left at www.sandhfuneralservice.com.

Jackie Emerson Carter was born on January 27, 1934 in Ottumwa, Iowa, the son of Vernon Carter and Maxine (Carter) Boiler. Jack enlisted in the Iowa National Guard in 1952 while still a student at Muscatine High School.  Upon graduation in 1954 he joined the United States Air force.  On December 26, 1954 he was united in marriage to Margaret Ann Thompson at the Letts United Methodist Church (they would have celebrated their 70th anniversary). The couple quickly reported to San Antonio Texas where they continued a 22-year career in the military which took them to bases in Texas, Missouri, North and South Dakota and included tours of duty in both Okinawa (1957-58) and Vietnam (1967-68).   

In 1974, Jack retired from the service. He returned with his family to the Letts area and found employment at Bandag and then HON in Muscatine.  Working with his Father-in-law, Arthur Thompson, Jack built the family home south of Letts where he and Margaret Ann lived for almost 50 years before moving to Lutheran Living in Muscatine.  He enjoyed woodworking and was a faithful member of the Letts United Methodist Church and the Grandview-Letts Lions Club.

Jack will be deeply missed by his wife Margaret Ann and five children: David (Cathy) Carter of Poplar Bluff, Missouri; Susan (Cyril) Meredith of Oak Ridge, Tennessee; Jon Carter of Letts; Tom (Teresa) Carter of Letts; Matt (Priscilla) Carter of Dubuque; 10 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren; siblings Duane (Joyce) Carter, John (Sue) Carter, Carolyn (Ben) Bennett, Alan (Margaret) Carter,  Ken (Pam) Carter, Les Carter, Jennifer (Steve) Vonk; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Donna Jean Carter; step-mother Gwendolyn Carter; step-father Raymond Boiler; sister JoAnn Johnson; and granddaughter Mary Catherine Rose Carter.
