Helen Veenker Obituary

Helen June Veenker, 82, of Lone Tree, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, February 9, 2021, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City peacefully with her daughter’s by her side.  A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date.  A memorial fund has been established at the funeral home in memory of Helen.  The Snyder and Hollenbaugh Funeral and Cremation Services of Lone Tree is caring for Helen’s family and arrangements.  Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.sandhfuneralservice.com.  

Helen Hensley was born on May 6, 1938, in Petoskey, Michigan the daughter of Ernest and Helen (Campbell) Hensley.  On January 19, 1981, Helen was united in marriage to Martin Dale Veenker in Iowa City.  Helen owned and operated the Elm Tree Family Restaurant in Lone Tree for several years.  She was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Lone Tree and enjoyed going to the Riverside Casino, Tama Casino to play Bingo and working on jigsaw puzzles, but most of all she dearly loved to spend time with her family. 

Helen will be deeply missed by her children, Deb (Joe) Galloway of Lone Tree, Lori Haynes of Lone Tree, John Wayne Herrington of Port Ritchie, Florida and Rebecca Long of Moncks Corner, South Carolina; many grandchildren and great grandchildren, including local grandchildren, Tessa Galloway and Corey (Ellie) Shaw and their daughter Ellana; siblings, Rosemarie Baldwin of Walla Walla, Washington, twin brother, Ernest Hensley of Grayville, Illinois and Jackie McKinney of Ponca City, Oklahoma and many nieces and nephews.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Martin; son, Jeff Long; son-in-law, Tee Haynes; brothers, Paul Hensley, Glen Hensley, Walt Hensley and Gene Hensley and sisters, Hazel Chapman, Lois Darnell, A. Rose Hensley, Becky Dugger and Linda Wells.
