Helen Berry, 92, of Muscatine, passed away on Wednesday, October 16, 2024 at Unity Point Health – Trinity Hospital Muscatine. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 24, 2024 at Snyder & Hollenbaugh Funeral & Cremation Services of Muscatine. Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. on Friday, October 25, 2024 at Wesley United Methodist Church. Following the services, a time of food and fellowship will be held at the church. Burial will follow the luncheon at 2:30 p.m. at Illinois City Cemetery. A memorial has been established for the family of Helen Berry. Online condolences may be left at www.sandhfuneralservices.com.
Helen LaVaughn Powell was born on April 23, 1932 at home in Illinois City, the daughter of Vaughn Tyler and Helen B. (Downey) Powell. Helen was a 1950 graduate of Reynolds High School, received her bachelor’s degree from Iowa Wesleyan and later went on to obtain her master’s degree in education. On June 19, 1955, Helen was united in marriage to Robert Berry at the Methodist Church in Illinois City. Helen began her teaching career in Germany where she taught the children of U.S. servicemen. Upon returning to the states, Helen went to work in the Rock Island school district and then taught 5th grade at Lincoln and Colorado schools of the Muscatine School District. Helen retired in May of 1995. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Illinois City Saddle Club and Drill Team, Geneva Country Club, DAR, TTT and women’s church circle. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, golfing, entertaining and attending her grandchildren’s sporting activities.
Helen will be deeply missed by her children, Cory A. (Linda) Berry and Wendy M. (Peter) Lizama, all of Muscatine; grandchildren, Hunter N. Berry, Taylor R. Berry and Trace Robert (Angie) Ball; great-grandchildren, Camdyn, Wyatt and Sawyer Ball; bonus grandchildren, Meredith Logan and Alex Ball; sister, Portia Carl of New Boston and sister-in-law, Wanda McCullough.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bob on January 3, 2020; and siblings, Sandra Spray and Vaughn “Windy” Powell.
The family would like to thank the staff of Addington Place and Unity Point Health -Trinity Hospital for their wonderful care and special thanks to sister-in-law, Wanda McCullough for her lifelong devotion to their family.
