Gary R. Swanson, 61, of Lone Tree, passed away on Sunday, February 7, 2021, at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics. The children of Gary Swanson would like to invite our friends, family and all those who and knew and loved our father to a celebration of life luncheon on February 5, 2022 from 11:00 A.M. -2:00 P.M. at the Lone Tree American Legion . We know this has been a long time coming and we appreciate all of your patience and understanding about our reasons to wait. We hope holding this celebration around the one-year anniversary will help bring peace, joy and comfort to all who knew Gary through the sharing of happy memories of his life. Gary Robert Swanson was born on April 19, 1959, in Iowa City, Iowa the son of Harry Robert and Gertrude Irene (Westlake) Swanson. Gary farmed the family farm since he was 14 and was a 1977 graduate of Lone Tree High School. He farmed in the Lone Tree area his entire life where he and Carmen raised their three children, Paige, Taylor and Lydia. Gary attended Parkview Church in Iowa City and Calvary Church in Muscatine. He enjoyed going to farm shows, car shows, the Iowa State Fair and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan; holding Iowa football season tickets for many years, but most of all, Gary loved to spend time with his family attending all of his children’s events.
Gary will be deeply missed by his children, Paige (Matt) Henderson of Atlanta, Georgia, Taylor Swanson of Wellman and Lydia Swanson of Iowa City; granddaughter Lillian Henderson; siblings, Cheryl (Larry) Schnoebelen of Iowa City, Janice Salm of North Liberty, Colene (Jim) Guthrie of Marion and Nancy Swanson of Lone Tree; brother-in-law, Harlan Stahmer of Iowa City; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews and his dog, Louie.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Carolyn Stahmer and brother-in-law, Thomas Salm.
