Frederick Bayne Obituary

Frederick M. Bayne, 94, of Wapello, Iowa, passed away on February 4, 2026, at the Wapello Specialty Care Center.

He was born on May 1, 1931, the third son of LeRoy and Grace Bayne. On February 17, 1952, in Oakville, Iowa, Fred married his high school sweetheart, Norma Jean Charbonneau. His constant companion for nearly 74 incredible years. Together, they built a family that meant

everything to him.

In 1962, he moved his family from the family farm to Wapello and began his career with Monsanto as the second hire at the new Muscatine plant. Many friendships were formed with co-workers and Fred continued to keep in touch with many of them. Later in his life, he enjoyed talking with former co-workers and reliving the days at Monsanto.

He enjoyed the simple pleasures: the Iowa Hawkeyes, Wapello High School Sports and even

driving the Wapello team bus for many years after retiring from Monsanto in 1985.  He rooted for the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Lions, even if he was the only fan of them in his family. Taking fishing trips to Canada with his brother Jim—memories he treasured deeply. Taking his

grandsons to a Iowa Hawkeye Bowl game. Traveling with his three daughters and Norma on trips that included the World’s Fair, visiting family in Portland, Oregon, and other destinations while always taking the scenic route in the family’s 1964 Ford Galaxie. Proud of his Scottish heritage, he would often enjoy a good scotch on the rocks.

Fred never gave up. Even after two broken hips, he used his walker to get to the backyard

garage to hop on the riding lawnmower to mow his own yard with much dismay from his family. Fred was a caring, giving man, especially for his grandchildren—he made it a point to attend all their sporting events, always showing up, always cheering them on along with their teammates.

Fred lived a full life, centered on family, hard work, and the people he loved most.

Fred is survived by his wife, Norma; daughters Denise (Bob) McCulley, Gail (David) Swails, and Julie Rossiter; seven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, all of whom he cherished.

He was preceded in death by his parents, LeRoy and Grace Bayne; his grandson Joshua; his son-in-law Kim Rossiter; and his brothers James and Edwin.

Fred will be remembered for his kindness, his reliability, and the quiet way he showed love—by being there. He leaves behind a family who will miss him deeply and carry his memory forward.

A Celebration of Life is planned for a future date.   Online condolences may be left for the family at www.sandhfunerlservice.com.  Snyder & Hollenbaugh Funeral & Cremation Services of Wapello is caring for Fred’s arrangements and his family.
