Fred "Fritz" Bartenhagen

Fred “Fritz” Bartenhagen, 76, of Muscatine passed away on Saturday, June 20, 2026 at his home, following an extended illness.  Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 25, 2026 at Snyder & Hollenbaugh Funeral & Cremation Services of Muscatine.  Funeral Service will be 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 25, 2026 at the funeral home.  Burial will be in Island Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Island Methodist Church, Camp Courageous or the charity of your choice in Fritz’s name.  Sympathy notes may be left for the family at www.sandhfuneralservice.com. 

Fred was born November 2, 1949 in Muscatine to Ernest and Wanda Bartenhagen.  He went to grade school at Hopewell country school in Louisa County, and graduated from high school at L & M school.  After graduation, he attended Jr. college in Muscatine for 2 years while driving a school bus to pay for his education. Fred then attended Central College in Pella for 2 years majoring in History and education.  After a stint of student teaching, he decided he did not like teaching and spent the rest of his life farming on the Muscatine Island.  Fred was united in marriage to Joan Glenney Griffin on June 21st, 1981 at Sweetland Methodist Church, celebrating 45 years of marriage.  He lovingly became a father to Joan’s son Douglas Griffin.  His farming legacy lives on through their son, Daniel Bartenhagen.  He was a 55-year member of the Island Methodist Church. 

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Joan, son, Daniel Bartenhagen, and siblings Kathy (Chris) Lund, Alaska, Karen (Jeff) Varnum, Roger (Becky) Bartenhagen, and Keith (Kim) Bartenhagen and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and step-son, Douglas Griffin.
