Frank Loren Campbell, 79, of Chicago, Illinois, passed away peacefully on March 14, 2025, in Altoona, Iowa. Frank was born on March 21, 1945, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Robert and Ruth (Lien) Campbell. As a young child, Frank’s family moved to Oakville, Iowa, where he spent his formative years.
Frank was an active child and earned his Eagle Scout rank in the Boy Scouts. He met his future wife, Carolyn Mangels, while attending Wapello High School. After graduation, Frank worked for a year before attending Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Illinois, where he studied Missionary Education for three years. While at Moody, Frank spent his summers working as a camp counselor at Forest Springs Ministries, teaching archery and serving as a lifeguard.
In 1967, Frank married Carolyn, and they moved to Greenville, Illinois, where he completed his Bachelor's Degree in Psychology and Outdoor Education at Greenville University. Shortly after, Frank was drafted and proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and was stationed at Fort Leavenworth in Kansas. After completing his service, he rejoined Carolyn in Chicago.
In his professional life, Frank worked for the State of Illinois and, later, the Federal government, retiring in 2004 from the U.S. Department of Education. For 50 years, Frank was an active member of LaSalle Street Church in Chicago, where he formed lifelong friendships and made a lasting impact on his community.
Frank was a devoted husband, father, and brother. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn; his daughter, Jana Brown (Aaron); his son, Jonathan; his brother Eugene (Mary); his sister Donna Whiting-Helton; his sister-in-law Lelia Nichols, as well as many nieces, nephews, and their children. Frank also has two grandsons on the way. He was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Ruth Campbell and his brother-in-law Gary Whiting.
Throughout his life, Frank enjoyed a variety of hobbies and activities. In his younger adult years, he was an avid runner, a member of his church’s choir, and enjoyed playing ping pong and volleyball. Later in life, Frank focused much of his energy on supporting his children, ensuring their involvement in their activities including swimming, baseball, soccer and much more.
The family would like to thank Prairie Vista Village and Suncrest Hospice in Altoona, Iowa for the excellent care Frank received the last 3+ years of his life.
