Eugene Keith Hamilton, 96, of Wapello, passed away Thursday, October 14, 2021 at his home. Celebration of life services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 30, 2021 the First United Presbyterian Church in Morning Sun with Pastor Jon Evans officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Saturday morning at the church. Inurnment with military honors will be held at Elmwood Cemetery. Following the committal service at the cemetery, a time of food and fellowship will be held at the First United Presbyterian Church in Morning Sun. Eugene was born October 8, 1925 in the Otter Creek Community north of Morning Sun, the son of Stephen Curtis and Lottie Edith (McConahay) Hamilton. After graduating from Morning Sun High School in 1943, he enlisted in the Marine Corps Training at San Diego for duty as a radio man. While there, he married his schoolmate, Lois L. Wilson, on June 8, 1944. Overseas duty in the Pacific included Guadalcanal, Okinawa, and post-war duty in Northern China. He was also known as Gene, Jeep and E.K.
After the war, he attended Iowa Wesleyan College and graduated from ISTC at Cedar Falls in 1950. This led to a position as a science teacher and athletic coach in Milford, Iowa in the early 50’s with a return to the family farm. In 1964, he was appointed Postmaster of Morning Sun and he retired in 1988.
Gene was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Morning Sun. He served his church diligently and received the coveted Get-Up-And-Go Award in his retirement years. Other facets of community service included scouting, school board, veterans’ affairs and farm preservation which reflected his penchant for the rural way of life leading to a strong America.
Gene will be deeply missed by his daughter, Carolyn Hotzel of Denver, Iowa; son, Keith (Jill) Hamilton of Lincoln, Nebraska; grandchildren: Hilary (Michael) Stanfa, Hannah Hamilton and Halle Hamilton
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in 2018, daughter, Cheryl Williamson; two brothers and two sisters.
