Dorothy Jean Helphrey, 92, of Winfield, passed away on Sunday, November 10, 2024 at Sunrise Terrace Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 13, 2024 at the Snyder & Hollenbaugh Funeral & Cremation Services of Winfield. Burial will follow at Winfield-Scott Township Cemetery. A visitation will be held Tuesday, November 12, 2024 from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The family will not be present. Memorials may be directed to the Winfield First Responders or to Sunrise Terrace Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in memory of Dorothy Jean. Dorothy Jean was born September 16, 1932 at her home farm in Winfield, Iowa, the daughter of Earl H. and Nellie (Fye) Kellogg. She graduated from Winfield High School and worked as a secretary for Cudahy Packing Company and for Iowa Southern Utilities in Winfield. Dorothy Jean was united in marriage to Wendell Harry Helphrey on December 11, 1954 in Winfield.
Dorothy Jean was a life-long farmer, working alongside her husband and son. She attended the First Presbyterian Church in Winfield and was a member of the Smokey Hall Neighborhood Club and enjoyed playing pinochle with Card Club. Dorothy Jean was also a Girl Scout Leader and she volunteered at Midwest Old Threshers. She enjoyed attending the Iowa State Fair for over 80 years and showing hogs for Kellogg Spots. Dorothy Jean loved gardening, reading, crafts, and she was a great cook. She loved attending Bluegrass festivals and baking with her granddaughter and great-granddaughter.
She will be deeply missed by her son, Kurtis (Kathy) Helphrey of Winfield; daughter, Karen (Mark) Garrett of Wayland; grandchildren: Katy (Michael) Black and Klinton (Sidney) Garrett; great-grandchildren: Madden, Karsyn and Kellon Black, and Lee Garrett; and her nieces and nephews.
Dorothy Jean was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 2021; and two brothers, Dale (Helen) Kellogg and Billy (Elva) Kellogg.
