Donald "Don" Hanks Obituary

Donald (Don) Franklin Hanks, 92, of Lone Tree, Iowa, entered his eternal home with the Lord on Sunday, November 9, 2025, at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City, surrounded by the love of his family. Don will be remembered for his faith, kindness and love for those around him.  Visitation will be held on Friday, November 14, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at the Snyder & Hollenbaugh Funeral & Cremation Services of Lone Tree.  Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 15, 2025, at the funeral home.  Following the services, a time of food and fellowship will be held at the Lone Tree American Legion Post 457.  Memorials may be directed to the Lone Tree Fire and Rescue in memory of Don.  Online condolences may be left for the family at www.sandhfuneralservices.com.

Don was born on Sunday, November 27, 1932, to Carl and Susan (Murray) Hanks at their rural home in Cedar County, Iowa. He attended school in Nichols through the eighth grade and spent the following years working various jobs and trucking before enlisting in the United States Army. Don served on active duty from 1952 to 1954 at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri, followed by several years in the Army Reserves.

After his time in the Army, Don began a life of hard work, establishing Hanks Truck Line, hauling cattle, hogs and grain. He operated the business for about 25 years before opening a car dealership, which he ran for another 25 years.

On May 8, 1960, Don married Joyce Joan Kadel in Buffalo Prairie, Illinois. To this union were born a son, Mitchell Scott Hanks, and a daughter, Kelli Diann Hanks.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce; his children, Mitch Hanks and Kelli (John) Forbes; three grandchildren, Danielle (Brennan) Lorack, Taylor Forbes and Madison (Bryar) Keltner; five great-grandchildren, Morgan Lorack, Dalton Lorack, Gannon Lorack, Jordy Forbes and Kellen Forbes; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Charles ‘Jack’ Hanks, Chester ‘Chet’ Hanks, Ferris Hanks and two sisters, Ruby Thompson and Florence Aldrich. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Rose, and twin brothers, Harland and Harold that passed in infancy.
