David “Dick” L. Chown, 80, of Nichols, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 15, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. at the Nichols Methodist Church. Memorial services will follow at 4:00 p.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Nichols Methodist Church or the Nichols Fire and Rescue. Online condolences may be left at www.sandhfuneralservice.com. David Louis Chown was born on December 28, 1945, in Iowa City, Iowa the son of Louis Wilbur and Genevieve Iola (Brown) Chown. He attended Nichols School and was a 1964 graduate of Columbus Community School. Dick proudly served his country in the United States Army Reserves from 1966 – 1972 as a Battalion Maintenance Seargent. On April 7, 1968, Dick was united in marriage to Barbara Louise Timm at the Zion Lutheran Church in Muscatine. Dick was a farmer in the Nichols area, milked Brown Swiss dairy cattle for 35 years and then had a cow/calf herd with his son, Jeff. He was a member of the Nichols Methodist Church, Lone Tree American Legion Post 457, Soil and Water Conservation District Commissioner for Muscatine County for 17 years, Muscatine County Cattlemen’s Association and Muscatine County Farm Bureau. Dick enjoyed combining corn, making hay, spending time with family and friends, going to church and spending time at home.
Dick will be deeply missed by his wife, Barb of Nichols; his children, Amanda “Amy” R. Hawker and husband, David of Manchester and Jeffrey “Jeff” D. Chown of Nichols; grandchildren, Kara R. Arrowood and husband, Noah of Clarion and Kamille M. Hawker of Manchester; siblings, Audrey E. McGinn of Lakewood, Colorado and Douglas W. Chown and wife, Marcia of Enid, Oklahoma and many nieces and nephews.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Wiladine Burns and brothers-in-law, Joe Burns and Paul McGinn.
