David Tapp Obituary

David Karl Tapp, 79, of Mediapolis, passed away on Tuesday, March 5, 2024 at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City surrounded by his loving family. A visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 10, 2024 at the Snyder & Hollenbaugh Funeral & Cremation Services of Mediapolis.  Funeral services and interment will be private. A memorial has been established for Mediapolis Fire & Ambulance in Dave’s name.  Online condolences can by left for the family at 

David was born on February 9, 1945 in Galesburg, Illinois, the son of George Stanley and Willa J. (Aby) Tapp. He graduated from Galesburg High School in 1963. Dave served honorably in the United States Air Force. He was united in marriage to Clara Phyllis West on February 25, 1968 in Abingdon, Illinois.

Dave worked in the newspaper business for 50 years. He started in 1967 at the Burlington Hawkeye and worked for the Daily Democrat, West Point Bee, Donnelson Star and Marion Times. Dave eventually bought and ran the Mediapolis News. He was always willing to help others and served the community of Mediapolis in several different ways. Dave was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and Chicago Cubs fan and he enjoyed following Mediapolis and Wapello sporting events. Gramps will be missed at Main & Harper, where he loved to sit on the front porch.

Dave will be deeply missed by his wife, Phyllis, of Mediapolis; children: Brian (Michele) Tapp of Des Moines; Rob (Chris) Tapp of Mediapolis; and Tricia (Regan) Lanz of Oakville; adopted son, Greg (Dayna) Kinsey of Wapello; 14 grandchildren: Bethany Tapp, Danielle Tapp, Mikayla Tapp, Jenna Tapp, Raiann (Ashton) Fehr, Meika Tapp, Brendon (Amber) Tapp, Ally Kinsey, Claire (Daniel) Steiner, Bryan Kinsey, Bryant Lanz, Emmalee Lanz, Jackson Lanz and Baylor Lanz; 7 great-grandchildren: Annie, Emmie and Maylee Fehr, Carson, Josie and Callen Steiner, and Bowen Tapp; and faithful companion, Sparky.

He was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law, Robert and Mary Elizabeth West; brothers, George and Donald Tapp; nieces, Mary Sue and Shirley Tapp; brothers-in-law, Ed West and Larry Fritz; and sisters-in-law, Nancy Tapp and Liz Fritz.
