Obituary

Donald “D.J.” Johnson, 66, of Mediapolis, passed away on Monday, March 13, 2023.  D.J. was born May 10, 1956 in Burlington, Iowa, the son of George Harris and Eunice Keala (Ah Puck) Johnson. He attended Burlington High School and graduated from Parkside High School in Kansas City. D.J. and Susan Fisher were married in July of 1976. They had three sons, “the Johnson boys.” They later divorced. D.J. and Sue Lehnherr were married on January 18, 1992.

Following graduation, D.J. took a position with the railroad for a short time before being hired on at J.I. Case. He retired in 2013 after 38 years on the job. He was a proud member of the UAW Local 807. During layoff times, he kept busy working at The Nira, The Sombrero, Brueck Construction, S & G Construction, Wilson Concrete and Rheinschmidt Marble and Granite to a name a few.

He was a devoted Bears and Cubs fan. After retiring, if he wasn’t out mowing for Blades of Green, he could be found in his “garage” cheering for his beloved Chicago teams. He also enjoyed playing pool, softball and golf. But for him, the greatest joy to be found came from spending time with friends and family, especially with his grandchildren.

He will be deeply missed by his wife, Sue; three sons: Jeremy (Bri) Johnson of Iowa City; Jared (Maggie) Johnson of Burlington; and Joshua (Sara Doty) Johnson of Mediapolis; his grandchildren: Tailor, Quinci, Payton, Zander, Ony, Carson, Jaxton, Keoni, Korbyn and Kian; his siblings: Phil (Kathy) Clevinger of Galesburg, IL; Geraldine (Tom) Elmore of Burlington; and Donna (Rick) Brockett of Burlington; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Wanda Lou Johnson; and two brothers: Jerry and Ronnie Johnson.

Interment will be private. The family will receive friends from 2:00-4:00 p.m. on March 31, 2023 prior to a remembrance service at 4:00 p.m. followed by a celebration of life, all at Clover Creek Event Venue in Mediapolis. The family would love to hear memories of D.J. from anyone in attendance who would like to share them at the remembrance service. Online condolences can by left for the family at www.sandhfuneralservice.com.  Memorials have been established for Southeastern Renal Dialysis or for the American Diabetes Association through Great River Health Foundation.
