D. Fern Mendenhall, 94, of Columbus Junction, Iowa, went home to be with her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, on March 9, 2023.
Fern was born December 20, 1928 in Havre, Iowa. She is the daughter of Clarence and Twila (McNeill) Owens. She married Leland Mendenhall on December 26, 1948. Fern worked alongside her husband, operating Mendenhall Repair for 40 years.
She attended Hope Bible Church, where she grew in her faith, and often times picked up friends and children so they could hear the gospel being preached and taught. Fern was also a member of the American Legion Post 100. In her later years, she enjoyed serving Thanksgiving dinner at The Salvation Army.
Fern devoted much of her time keeping up with the grandkids, great grandkids, and Welsh cousins. Family was dearly loved and important to her. Her other interests included walking her dog, raising flowers (she loved sunflowers), collecting rocks, and bird watching. You could also find her at a garage sale, writing letters, sending cards, and reading.
Survivors include two sons, Tim Mendenhall and wife, Char, and Tom Mendenhall and wife, Barb, all of Columbus Junction. Three daughters, Sara Duffy and husband, Ralph, of Lorain, OH, and Jane Amos and husband, Glenn, of Clarks Summit, PA, and Keren Mendenhall of Romeoville, IL. Ten grandchildren, Eric Mendenhall, Paul Duffy, Heather (Duffy) Spencer, Ryan Duffy, Luke Amos, Abigail (Amos) Dubbe, John Mark Amos, Ethan Mendenhall, Kaitlyn Mendenhall, Maki Mendenhall, and 19 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers, Max and Wayne, and one granddaughter, Holly (Mendenhall) Burroughs.
The service and burial will take place at the Cambrian Cemetery in Columbus Junction on Sunday, March 12, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. After the service, friends and family are also welcome for a time of food and fellowship at the American Legion in Columbus Junction.
