Connie June (Jennings) Greene

Connie June (Jennings) Greene, 90, of Columbus Junction passed away on Friday, August 29, 2025 at Colonial Manor where she resided for the last five years.   Graveside Services for family and friends will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 5, 2025 in Columbus City Cemetery where Connie will be laid to rest next to her parents.  All that are attending the graveside are encouraged to bring a lawn chair if needed.  A golf cart will be provided for anyone who might need assistance.  In lieu of flowers and in honor of Connie’s memory, donations may be directed to Moline High School c/o Moline Public Schools Foundation, 1900 52nd Avenue, Moline, Illinois 6165.  Your generosity will directly benefit the youth programs in the community and that would have meant so much to Connie.   Memorials may also be directed to Hospice Compassus of Washington County. Connie June Jennings was born on May 1, 1935, at the home of her parents, Clarence Albert (C.A.) and Margueritte Carol (Marion) Jennings.  She attended schools in Wyman (now Winfield – Mt. Union) where she was active in music programs, theatre production and played varsity basketball.  During high school, she was active in the livewires, 4-H club, and served as county president during her final year.  It was during this tenue that she met her future husband. 

On September 13, 1952, Connie married Robert Lee Greene, also of Columbus Junction, in Kahoka, Missouri.  They farmed and raised livestock in Ainsworth and Columbus City areas.  In the early 60’s connie showed their hogs throughout the Midwest.  The couple won grand championship awards at every level in numerous competitions.  She was the first woman in the Austin Minnesota National Barrow Show to win the truckload contest.  On September 1, 1963, she was a guest on “What’s My Line,” taped in New York City for showing, selling and judging hogs.  As her children left for college and careers, Connie taught tole painting at the Columbus City farmhouses.  Her classes were well attended by many participants. 

After over thirty years together, the couple divorced in September 1984.  Connie moved to Raleigh North Carolina.  She was employed there by Ladybug Childcare Services and managed a local craft and hobby store.  Ten years later, Connie moved back to Iowa and resided at Clark House.  She served as a SHIPP counselor and organized weekly quilting seminars for the residents.  The completed quilts were donated to local county shelters.  And in early 1990’s she relocated to Sunrise Terrace in Winfield where she resided for the next twenty years.  She was active in the local Presbyterian Congregation and served as resident coordinator to the Sunrise management team. 

Connie was proud to be a farm wife and mother. She embraced all the hard work that went with these responsibilities.  Throughout her extraordinary life she touched many people and accomplished many things.  She instilled the importance of good quality pork products and shared her knowledge with family, friends and visitors to her home.

She will be deeply missed by her family including her children: Robin Lea of Los Angeles, California, Cynthia Joanne Hanft (Frank Beaver) of Coralville, and Ronald Lynn of Muscatine, three grandchildren, Tyne Margueritte (Louis) Kemp of Viroqua, Wisconsin, Jackson Robert (Beth Kusek) Hanft of Beaverton, Oregon and Cassandra Grace (Josh) VandeWalle of Stockton; five great-grandchildren: Schaffer, Joanna, Gemma, Huck and Isla, brother, Mel (Jane) Jennings; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Connie was preceded in death by her parents and her bother Myron.
