Carol Spore Obituary

Carol M. Spore, 96, of Muscatine, passed away on Thursday, January 5, 2023, at her home.  Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 11, 2023, from 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. at Calvary Church. Celebration of Life will follow visitation at 11:30 a.m. at the church, with food and fellowship thereafter.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Spring Valley Bible Camp or Calvary Church.  Sympathy notes may be left for the family at www.sandhfuneralservice.com.  Snyder & Hollenbaugh Funeral & Cremation Services is caring for Carol’s family and the arrangements.

Carol Marjorie Gunnerson was born on November 29, 1926, in Moline, Illinois, the daughter of Arthur R. and Hazel G. (Loding) Gunnerson.  On January 24, 1946, Carol was united in marriage to Joseph E. Spore, who preceded her in death on April 1, 1996.  Carol and Joseph began their married life in Rock Island, Illinois, before moving in 1966 to Fort Dodge.  Carol was employed as a telephone operator for Illinois Bell Telephone Co. for 21 years and later Centel of Fort Dodge for 17 years, retiring in 1983.   In 1993, they moved to Muscatine to be closer to their son and grandchildren.

Carol attended Calvary Church and was active in her Bible Study group, relishing time with “her girls” each week. She valued hard work and order, and was an ardent organizer, always priding herself on keeping a well-manicured lawn.  While Joseph was alive, they enjoyed woodworking together, creating many artful objects and toys, which they shared with family and friends. She took great pleasure in cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes, Iowa State Cyclones, and Chicago Bulls, and when she wasn’t watching games, she could be found watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune every evening.  Carol was as strong-willed as they come. She was proud of her Swedish ancestry and never hesitated to remind you.  Her son, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were her pride and joy, and she showed them great love throughout her life.  Her legacy will be that of a joyful servant – one that never hesitated to be grateful and was often overheard saying “thank you, thank you, thank you.”

Carol will be deeply missed by her son, Brian (Dianne) Spore of Muscatine; three grandchildren, Chad (Heidi) Spore of Dysart, Heather (Jon) Nelson of Jefferson City, Missouri, and Andrew (Olivian Cha) Spore of Pasadena, California; 13 great grandchildren, Hallie (Oliver) Dies, Carter Spore, Sam Spore, Carlie Spore, Hayden Spore, Cooper Spore, Caleb Spore, Hannah Spore, Alea Nelson, Nehemiah Nelson, Annalise Nelson, Judah Nelson, and Doris Cha Spore; and brother, Richard Gunnerson of Andover, Illinois.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joseph; and brothers Arthur, Dale, and Harold Gunnerson.
