Byron Duane Olson, 78, died on May 3, 2023 at Lutheran Living, Muscatine following an extended illness. No visitation or services are currently planned. Family burial will take place in Ridgewood Cemetery, North Liberty at a later date. Snyder & Hollenbaugh Funeral & Cremation of Muscatine is caring for Byron’s arrangements.
Byron was born on June 17, 1944 in Pennington, MN and raised in Long Beach, CA. Byron and his wife, Martie met at Whittier College. After graduation, they traveled and settled back in Long Beach. Later, the family started a homestead on part of Martie’s family farm in North Liberty.
The couple were involved in many US-USSR peace building activities during the 80’s. During that time, they ran a private student exchange program and made trips to the former Soviet Union. They also enjoyed numerous cruises to Alaska.
Byron last worked in tax preparation and bookkeeping. In retirement, they relocated to Bellingham, WA and had recently moved back to Iowa. Byron enjoyed reading, cooking, and puzzles.
Surviving family include his wife of 57 years, Martie (nee Mary Beth Baldwin), son Sean (Brandy) Olson of Muscatine, IA, daughter Amy Olson of Bellingham, WA, and brother Kevin (Cindy) Olson of Modesto, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Orten and Mabel; and son, Jamie.
